Parliament member forwarded to the Verkhovna Rada draft law suggesting to impose an embargo on all imports to Ukraine from Belarus, and prohibit entry into new agreements with Belarusian entities that may result in financial obligations for Ukrainian ones.

According to the explanatory note, the measure is to respond to the continued undermining of democracy, human rights violations in Belarus and the recent migrant border crisis.

Earlier this year the EU, Canada, the US, and some other countries have introduced blocking and sectoral sanctions against Belarus, and plan to expand them further. Ukraine is among the countries that also applied sanctions by terminating direct flights with Belarus, restricting flights across Belarusian airspace, and introducing blocking sanctions against certain Belarusian officials.

The draft law is in the initial stage of review and is subject to negotiations within the Parliament committees, relevant Ministries, representatives of business, and their associations. Afterwards the draft law will be put to vote by the Verkhovna Rada.
